Kolkata, November 12 : Ahead of the upcoming India–South Africa Test match scheduled for November 14 at Eden Gardens, Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir visited the famous Kalighat Temple in Kolkata on Tuesday to offer prayers to Goddess Kali. The Indian team, led by captain Shubman Gill, has already arrived in the city for the much-anticipated match.

Following his long-standing tradition, Gambhir reached the temple around 4 p.m. from the team hotel and performed rituals for nearly 15 minutes, seeking blessings for the team.
Unprecedented Security Arrangements in Kolkata
After the explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday, security has been tightened across major cities, including Kolkata. Police have increased vigilance in and around Eden Gardens, team hotels, and prominent public areas. Random naka-checking operations have also been initiated to ensure no security lapses occur during the match.
Police Commissioner Reviews Security at Eden Gardens
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma personally inspected the security arrangements at Eden Gardens on Tuesday afternoon. He instructed all officials to remain on high alert and ensure foolproof protection for both teams. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has also requested additional security around the Indian team’s accommodation.
During Gambhir’s temple visit, security arrangements were of VVIP level. The temple premises were completely cordoned off, with senior police officials and a special security van stationed on-site throughout the visit. Local police personnel were also deployed to maintain crowd control.
When reporters sought Gambhir’s reaction to the Red Fort blast incident, he chose not to comment and quietly left the temple premises after completing the puja.
Gautam Gambhir, who hails from Delhi, is known for his deep faith and regular visits to Kalighat Temple whenever he is in Kolkata — a ritual he has continued even after taking charge as Team India’s head coach.
